IPHONE EXPANSION: Virgin Mobile USA, one of Sprint's brands for prepaid, no-contract phone service, is the latest company to offer Apple's iPhone in the U.S.
WHAT'S DIFFERENT: It's charging more than usual for the phone, $549 for a basic model, but monthly service will be relatively cheaper, at $30 a month. Over two years, customers could save nearly $800. No contract is required.
FOR APPLE: Expanding sales to the no-contract segment means a chance to reach buyers who don't have the credit for contract-based plans, or don't want to be tied down with contracts.
