LOWER FINES: In an appeal, a European court rejected Microsoft's request to dismiss a fine levied in 2008 in a long-running antitrust case. But it did trim it by 39 million euros to 860 million euros ($1.1 billion).
BIG MONEY: Counting two earlier fines, the case has wound up costing Microsoft a grand total of 1.64 billion euros.
CLOSURE: The ruling by the General Court of the European Union closes a case against the software giant that began in 1998.
