THE RISK: Microsoft is heading into unusual territory with its Surface tablet computer. It will be competing with its partners - companies that make Windows PCs.
THE GAMBLE: Microsoft has little to lose, as PC manufacturers have so far had very little success with their own tablets.
THE LANDSCAPE: Microsoft is competing with Apple Inc. and its iPad by borrowing a page from Apple's playbook. It is keeping both software and hardware development under the same roof.
