NEW YORK (AP) - HBO co-president Richard Plepler will replace Bill Nelson as CEO when he retires at the end of the year.

Eric Kessler, the other co-president of HBO, will become president and chief operating officer, Time Warner Inc. said Thursday. Time Warner owns HBO.

Nelson has been chairman and CEO of HBO since 2007. He was chief operating officer from 2002 to 2007. Plepler and Kessler also took their current positions in 2007.

The company said Plepler had been involved with some of HBO's most successful shows, including "True Blood" and "Game of Thrones."

Shares of Time Warner rose 23 cents to $45.74 in late afternoon trading.
