UI Soccer: Boyden Named WAC Goalkeeper of the Week

by Univ. of Idaho Athletics

DENVER – University of Idaho senior goalkeeper Liz Boyden was honored Monday as the Western Athletic Conference women's soccer Goalkeeper of the Week for the week of Sept. 17-23, after her performances against Utah Valley and UNLV last weekend.

Boyden, a fifth-year senior from Spokane, Wash. (Ferris HS), extended her Idaho career record with her 14th career shutout on Friday in the team's 1-0 victory over Utah Valley, and then made six saves on Sunday against UNLV in a 1-0 loss.

She earned a combined 11 saves during the week and the only score allowed was an own goal. Entering Sunday's game, UNLV had won six games in a row and earned a No. 10 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region poll. The Rebels were also averaging 2.5 goals per game at home during the season.

The honor is Boyden's first this season and her third career weekly honor. She was selected as the WAC Defensive Player of the Week once each season in 2009 and 2010.

Boyden is Idaho's career leader in every goalkeeping statistical category with 332 saves, 26 wins, 14 shutouts, 6,171 minutes and a 1.41 goals-against average. Her saves total also ranks seventh in WAC history.

Denver forward Kristen Hamilton was chosen WAC Offensive Player of the Week, while Louisiana Tech defender Brittany Beddow was selected as Defensive Player of the Week.

Boyden and the Vandal women open WAC play this weekend at conference newcomers Texas State and UTSA on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
