TENNIS: Gonzaga Improving at WSU Cougar Classic

by Gonzaga Athletics

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team wrapped up its second day at the WSU Cougar Classic Saturday, leaving ninth-year head coach D.J. Gurule with a better idea of what direction his squad is headed.

"We had another mixed day," Gurule said. "We definitely played better doubles in the morning. Prue Teitzel and Melanie Yates; Katie Edwards and Sissi [Franziska Koehler] played well and they all showed improvements."

The duo of Teitzel and Yates won its consolation match 8-4 in flight one over the University of Portland's Milagros Cubelli and Tori Troesch. In the same flight, Edwards and Koehler handled business against Eastern Washington University's Moira Hedberg and Chrissy Uriate 8-3.

In singles, Isabelle Klingert won a tight battle against Gabriella Weissman from Seattle University 5-7, 6-2, (10-5). The victory was one of the two matches Gonzaga won in the consolation bracket of flight one. The other win was Edwards who went to three sets with Nastya Polyakova from the Portland 4-6, 7-6, (10-8).

"Katie really played well," Gurule stated. "I was impressed with her composure and confidence. Isabelle also pulled out her close match, unfortunately we lost three other tight matches, but we are getting some great experience. This weekend will definitely help us in the future."

Yates dropped her quarterfinal match in flight two against Montana State University's Ellie Crum 6-0, 6-2 but the Bulldogs did win two matches in the consolation bracket. Samantha Polayes beat Emily Mahairas of Portland 6-2, 6-1 and Alexandra Tallas defeated Florence Martina from Lewis-Clark State College 6-2, 6-2.

"Hopefully we can finish strong Sunday and end the weekend on a positive note," Gurule said.

The final matches of the tournament begin Sunday morning.
