Petersen puzzling over Boise State's return woes

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Many coaches might be hard pressed to find flaws in Boise State's 49-14 shellacking of Hawaii.

But Broncos coach Chris Petersen is puzzling to explain the breakdowns that enabled the Warriors to return a first-quarter kick for a touchdown - the second Boise State's allowed in the last two weeks.

Two weeks ago, the Broncos gave up a 100-yard, opening kick return TD in a 21-19 loss to San Diego State. Then Hawaii's Mike Edwards tied the game 7-7 early in the first quarter Saturday. Boise State overcame the special teams lapse against the Warriors, scoring the next 42 points.

Still, Petersen says he's concerned and blames injuries and poor tackling for the drop off.

The Broncos (8-2, 5-1 Mountain West) play their final home game Saturday against Colorado State.
