This morning my attention is focused, really, on just two things: a milestone in Gonzaga basketball history and high school hoops madness.
Gonzaga reached its highest ranking ever, being placed at No. 2 in today's AP Top 25 writers poll. They were at No. 3, but a loss by Miami forced the writers' hands, as the Hurricanes fell all the way to No. 5.
Up until today, the Zags' highest-ever ranking was in the 2003-04 season when they were ranked No. 3.
The other thing taking up my time this morning is high school basketball. And why not? It's tournament time! The State B (1B, 2B classifications) start Thursday at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, and we'll (I'll) be there in full force. The 1A and 2A schools are in Yakima at the SunDome, and the 3A and 4A teams are in Tacoma at the Tacoma Dome. We'll have teams at every venue.
Idaho is also holding the boys tournaments this weekend. Lake City and Post Falls are both in contention for the 5A title in Nampa.
Be sure to check out the high school section often this week. We've got brackets; we'll have stores; we'll post stories; we'll update scores. If you have a story to tell, we encourage you to upload your photos to tell us about it!
I love this time of year!
P.S. Oh, and one more thing. It's already starting to look like spring in California. Cal and Arizona start spring football practice this weekend. Can you believe it?
The Pac-12 put out a nice little "what to watch for" piece today. At the very end of it they mention Washington State:
"Don't be surprised if Austin Apodaca is given the chance to push Halliday either as Leach tries to find the perfect fit behind center."
Okay. If you say so.
