SWXRIGHTNOW.COM: College basketball season has officially begun and the Gonzaga Women are glad to have their fans back.
The Spokane community got their first look at the 2012-2013 Gonzaga Women's Basketball team at Fan Fest on Saturday and the players were glad to have them back. When the doors first opened, the team was spread out around the concourse, meeting and greeting their fans and thanking them for coming back for another year. "The fans were excited as ever," said junior forward Stephanie Golden. All that excitement is fitting considering the impressive resume this Bulldogs team has built over the last few years, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2011.
Gonzaga was ranked 25th in the nation in home attendance last year with an average of 4,060, which included several sellouts of the 6,000 seat McCarthey Athletic Center. The most loyal 1,704 fans were on hand Saturday,a and the women didn't disappoint. The team even performed a dance before the game to Flo Rida's "I Cry," choreographed by Pardis Nkoy, a member of the Gonzaga Dance Team.
The team wanted to thank their fans for coming out and sharing the afternoon with them by giving them a show they could remember. Golden said, "We're spoiled to have them really."
The Zags have an exhibition on November 3 against Eastern Oregon University, and they kick off their regular season on November 7, matching up with UC Riverside.
