Gonzaga was looking to add to its storied season with a deep tournament run.
Instead, the Bulldogs are going home early.
A day removed from a close call against 16-seed Southern, Gonzaga lost a late lead and dropped a round of 32 game to Wichita State, 76-70, as the Shockers advanced to the Sweet 16.
Wichita State -- down eight points at one time in the second half -- took a four-point lead on a Ron Baker 3-pointer with 2:55 left. On the ensuing possession, Kelly Olynyk hit an elbow jumper to bring the Bulldogs to 67-65.
With the shot clock running down and Wichita State clinging to a two-point lead, Fred Vanvleet hit a deep 3-ball with 1:32 remaining to extend the advantage to 72-67.
From there, it was a game of free throws, and the Shockers made just enough to get the win.
After a slow start, the second half was all Gonzaga early, as it built an eight-point lead. The Bulldogs threatened to pull away on several occasions, but the Shockers matched Gonzaga shot-for-shot to stay in the contest.
Gonzaga endured a seven-minute first-half scoreless stretch that Wichita State took advantage of with a 16-4 run to take a 26-14 lead. The Bulldogs fought back at the end of the half and trailed 36-31 heading into intermission.
