Gonzaga University baseball head coach Mark Machtolf has announced that two players have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Zags for the 2013-14 school year. The Bulldogs will welcome right-handed pitcher Brandon Bailey from Broomfield, Colo., and right-handed pitcher Jack Morello from Sherman Oaks, Calif., to the 2014 squad.
"This recruiting class, although not nearly as large as our past two, is on the same level of bringing in the best prospects on the West Coast," Machtolf said. "We are very excited to add two outstanding pitchers and fantastic young men to our baseball program at Gonzaga. I am convinced that Brandon and Jack will not only compete on the mound, but also in the classroom and the Spokane community."
Brandon Bailey 5-9, 180, RHP (Broomfield High School/Broomfield, Colo.)
Bailey has accumulated a laundry list of accolades the past few seasons. Highlighting his honors includes his name on the 2013 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America list and winner of the 2012 Colorado 4A State Championship. During his championship season, Bailey finished with an 11-0 record and 1.02 ERA, which included eight complete games, six shutouts, 112 strike outs and only 16 batters walked. His incredible season earned him Colorado 4A First Team All-State, Colorado 4A Player of the Year and BoCoPreps.com Player of the Year. Bailey has excelled in the classroom as well with honor roll selections all four years and has a 3.7 GPA.
Scouting Report on Bailey: Posses a big time fastball sitting in the 91-93 range and topping out at 95mph. He uses his plus slider and changeup to put away hitters and has a bulldog mentality that could position him as a future closer. He has outstanding makeup on the mound and loves to have the ball when the game is on the line.
Why Bailey chose Gonzaga: "I chose Gonzaga because of my instant connection with all three coaches, the outstanding baseball facilities and the great academic support. Coach Machtolf and his staff were very welcoming and clear on what Gonzaga University had to offer, making me feel comfortable and confident that GU was the best fit for me athletically, but more importantly academically."
Machtolf on Bailey: "Brandon is going to be a great fit for our program, not only on the mound but as a teammate in the clubhouse. He is a proven champion and loves to compete at the highest level. We are looking forward to adding his power arm and are thrilled that one of the best pitchers in the state of Colorado chose Gonzaga baseball for his collegiate career."
Jack Morello, 6-2, 175, RHP (Notre Dame High School/Sherman Oaks, Calif.)
Morello has impressed both on the mound and in the classroom. One the field in 2011 the righty struck out 45 batters in 37 innings and was named to the Mission League's All-Academic team. He was ranked the 86th best pitcher in California and 159th nationally by Perfect Game. At the Perfect Game National Showcase last summer, he threw two perfect innings in his appearance in Minneapolis, Minn. He has also been selected for the Under Armour Pre-Season All-America team.
Scouting Report on Morello: Considered a very talented right handed pitcher that has great upside and projection. He poses a fastball in the 88-92 range with an above average changeup and slider that completes his three pitch arsenal. He has performed well on the national stage at the AZ Fall Classic and the World Wood Bat Classic earning national recognition.
Why Morello chose Gonzaga: "I picked Gonzaga because I have a ton of respect for the coaching staff. When I visited the campus with my family, the atmosphere just felt right. I have enjoyed talking to coach Machtolf and assistant athletic director for academic support services Mike Roden, whom have emphasized the academic integrity of Gonzaga student-athletes and the support players can expect for school. The facilities were very impressive too."
Machtolf on Morello: "We are very excited for Jack to join the Gonzaga baseball program and to add another high level prospect to our 2014 pitching staff. We feel Jack has the opportunity to make an immediate impact as a freshman with his ability to compete on the mound with three very quality pitches. His prep pitching career at Notre Dame in Los Angeles, Calif., is one of the best high school baseball conferences in the country and will only add to his preparation to compete and pitch at the Division I level."
