Daugherty sidelined with acute appendicitis

The Washington State women's basketball team will be without head coach June Daugherty for tonight's Pac-12 Tournament game after she was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

"Coach Daugherty started to experience some pain in her stomach early today, the pain then increased following this afternoon's shootaround and she began to experience appendicitis symptoms," stated WSU Team Physician Dennis Garcia in a press release. "We then took coach Daugherty to the hospital and following an evaluation, it was determined that she was suffering from an acute appendicitis. Her prognosis is excellent, she will have surgery to remove the appendix this evening, and is expected to be discharged in the morning."

The eighth-seeded Cougars face ninth-seeded Arizona State in an opening-round matchup in Seattle at 6 p.m. If Washington State advances, it will face top-seeded Stanford at 6 p.m. on Friday.

UPDATE -- 10:03 p.m.

Washington State has sent out an email saying Daugherty's surgery went well and she will stay in the hospital overnight for recovery. The surgery began around tipoff, but Daugherty is aware of the win.
