The Spokane Chiefs scored twice in the third period to open up a 1-1 game as they defeated the Everett Silvertips 3-1 in front of 4,714 fans at the Spokane Arena Wednesday night. Garret Hughson stopped 20 shots and Todd Fiddler scored two goals as Spokane improved to 11-2-0-0 at home and 16-7-0-0 overall. The first period featured plenty of physical play between the U.S. Division rivals but few quality scoring opportunities as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 20 minutes of the contest.Spokane had the only power play of the opening period starting at 7:03 but their best chance, a one-timer from Fiddler, was turned away by Everett goalie Daniel Cotton. The Chiefs outshot the Silvertips 12-9 in the period. It took Spokane just 57-seconds to score in the second as Fiddler would not be denied again, firing a shot from the point past Cotton on the power play with assists from Reid Gow and Brenden Kichton.Everett looked to tie the game up on their power play starting at the 9:50 mark but Hughson continued his strong work between the pipes to maintain Spokane's 1-0 lead. The Chiefs goalie stopped all seven shots he faced in the period as Spokane outshot Everett 10-7.The Silvertips tied the game up at the 1:46 mark of the third and temporarily seized the momentum as Trent Lofthouse scooped up a loose puck and slipped it through Hughson's five-hole for a power play goal. Spokane bounced back quickly though, regaining the lead for good at 4:41 with Reid Gow beating Cotton top shelf on an assist from Kichton. Hughson and the Chiefs defense took it from there, keeping Everett off the board for the rest of the third period. Fiddler added an empty net goal on assists from Mike Aviani and Connor Chartier at 19:03 for the final score of the game. Hughson finished with 20 saves on 21 opportunities while Cotton was 33 of 35. Spokane was 1 of 3 on the power play and 1 for 2 on the penalty kill. The three star recipients for tonight were: Reid Gow (1st), Brenden Kichton (2nd), and Micro Mueller (3rd). The Chiefs travel to Tri-City on Friday before returning to the Spokane Arena for a 7:05 PM game against the Americans on Saturday for Coeur d'Alene Casino B-I-N-G-O Night.
