Senators meet with Afghan president

WASHINGTON (AP) - Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai is meeting with members of the Senate to discuss what Republican leader Mitch McConnell says are mutual goals for the two countries.

Karzai sat down on Wednesday for a private session with McConnell and a few members of the Foreign Relations and Armed Services panels, Sens. Bob Casey, Tim Kaine and Deb Fischer. The small attendance reflects the fact that the Senate is on a two-week break and most lawmakers are out of Washington.

In brief remarks, Karzai said he hopes to return to Afghanistan with, in his words, "what the Afghans expect of me to take back."

Karzai declined to answer a question about what he thinks should be the size of the U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan.
