Akin rape remark highlighted in talking brochures

By DAVID A. LIEBAssociated Press

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A pro-Democratic group is mailing talking brochures to Missouri homes with an audio clip of Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin using the phrase "legitimate rape."

The group American Bridge 21st Century said the talking campaign materials could arrive in mailboxes as soon as Thursday.

The brochure is printed with the phrase: "Todd Akin would like a few words with you." When opened, an audio clip plays in which Akin says: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways of try to shut that whole thing down."

Akin has apologized repeatedly for making that remark during an August TV interview and has forged ahead with his campaign against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

The flier also features audio clips of Akin speaking about Social Security and federal student loans.
