WSU Extends Student Assistance As Aid Backlog Numbers Decline

**Press Release From WSU**

PULLMAN, Wash. - Some 2,000 Washington State University students are still without their full financial aid after computer issues early this semester created a backlog in a new financial aid disbursement system. While workers have eliminated a considerable amount of the backlog, a number of remaining student accounts will require manual processing.

"While we are making progress, we still have a considerable backlog with file review," said John Fraire, WSU vice president of Student Services. "We've hired additional staff to help with the backlog, but the process remains time-consuming."

WSU has issued $92 million in financial aid this semester, which is about 77 percent of the amount of aid disbursed last year.

This week, WSU President Elson S. Floyd directed that the suspension of all tuition late fee assessments be extended for the remainder of the semester. He also extended a program offering interest-free emergency loans to students in need through the end of the fall semester.

Roughly 13,900 students of an estimated 15,900 have received some, if not all, of their financial aid for this semester. The university has made approximately $1.5-million in interest-free emergency bridge loans to students.
