SPOKANE, Wash. – It may be the first full week of June, but it doesn't feel like it.
The gray, gloomy skies stretching all over the Inland Northwest are breaking records many of us would rather leave alone.
For instance, the National Weather Service shows that the old daily rainfall record for Colville was set back in 1982 at 0.84 inches.
But now? We've set a new one at 0.94.
Rainfall records have also been broken in the Grand Coulee Dam and Newport areas.
Our cold temperatures are also breaking records for this time of year – both for daytime highs and overnight lows. Records were broken or tied in Mullan Pass, Omak, Republic, Colville, Grand Coulee Dam, Newport and Winthrop.
Mullan Pass tied a record overnight low of 26 degrees, set almost 60 years ago.
This time of year, Avista starts closing the spill gates at the Post Falls Dam, to bring the summer lake levels up in Coeur D'Alene. But with all this rain, they've had to re-open them so the levels don't get too high.
Area mountains are even seeing snow; employees at Schweitzer Resort in Sandpoint, Idaho, report 8 inches fell yesterday.
"Yesterday when we came up to work, it looked like mid-January at the mountain," said Marketing Coordinator Sean Briggs. "It was just dumping snow."
He said it's the first time he's ever seen that much powder falling in June.
But they didn't even see the worst of it.
The National Weather Service reports Hidden Lake, in northern Idaho, got 11 inches of snow Wednesday, and Bunchgrass Meadows in the NE Washington mountains received a whopping 15 inches.
