UPDATE: The Washington State University professor accused of rape has been released from jail.

Andrew Appleton, 51, a professor of politics at WSU, had been held on a $100,000 bond stemming from charges he raped a teen girl.

Appleton had been a tenured professor at WSU, but has since been removed from his duties

Appleton will next be in court October 3rd for an arraignment.

   UPDATE: Andrew Appleton, 51, was arraigned Wednesday morning for felony rape in Latah County magistrate court. He appeared in person with his defense lawyer and the judge set his bond at $100,000. Appleton said nothing in court and his next hearing is set for October 3rd.WSU Spokesperson Darin Watkins tells KHQ Appleton has been removed from his duties and is not welcome on campus.Appleton is an Associate Professor if Political Science and began his career with WSU during a one-year stint in 1989. He left to work at a college in Buffalo, New York, but returned to WSU in Pullman in 1994 and has been with the University ever since.Appleton is a British citizen, and earned his bachelors from the University of Birmingham in 1983, his masters from the London School of Economics in 1984, and his Ph.D. from New York University in 1992. UPDATE: Appleton was arrested Tuesday around noon for felony rape of a minor. The victim says she was intimidated and coerced into having sex with Appleton starting when she was 16 and continuing until she left the area. After leaving the area and turning 18 she came back to Moscow and filed a report with the police. ORIGINAL STORY: MOSCOW, Idaho - The Latah County Sheriff's office confirmed 51-year-old Andrew Appleton is in custody on a felony rape charge at the Latah County Jail. Allegedly Appleton raped a teenage girl. Appleton is a professor at Washington State University. According to the WSU website, Appleton is an Associate Professor of Politics.
