SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police say a person trying to steal a car was shot and killed by the owner of the car just before 8 a.m. Monday. It happened in the 1400 block of N. Lee, and police are investigating more than one shot fired.
The suspect drove two blocks before crashing into a road sign and tree, then into a garage. The suspect died at the scene. Police say no charges have been filed as the investigation is ongoing.
Witnesses told KHQ they heard gunshots then the sirens; one woman said she thought she was dreaming. The owner of the garage where the suspect crashed is not hurt, but his bedroom is just feet from where the stolen car came to rest.
The name of the suspect will be released by the Medical Examiner once an autopsy is complete.
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE POLICE DEPT: Just before 8:00am Monday Spokane Police received a call from a homeowner in the 1400 block of N. Lee stating that a vehicle, belonging to the homeowner had just been stolen and that the homeowner had shot at the individual who had stolen the car (a green suburban).
Spokane Police responded to the call moments later and found the car the caller reported as stolen had crashed into a nearby garage. Spokane Fire and EMS (in addition to Police) responded to the scene and attempted to resuscitate the man who had reportedly stolen the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Spokane Police Major Crimes Detectives have cordoned off the area and are thoroughly investigating the scene, which spans several blocks. Additionally, MCU detectives are speaking with the homeowner who shot the gun.
The Spokane County Coroner's Office has removed the body from the scene and will be conducting an autopsy.
