SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Lifting a downed tree, replacing flower pots, and cleaning her yard and garage was not the way Deanna Rector expected to spend her July 4th weekend.
"I'm trying to get the dirt out of the there so I can put the tree back in," Rector explained, shovel in hand, as she prepared to put a downed tree back in it's upright spot.
She was cleaning up the mess left behind from a group of teens up to no good.
"They did a lot of damage," she said.
Rector got a rude awakening around 4:30 Thursday morning after a driver of a truck crashed into her garage at 11th and Homestead in Spokane Valley. Rector woke to the sounds of squealing tires, which she said were teens doing donuts just outside of her home. When she got up to see what was going on, she felt the crash.
"The house got a good shake," she explained.
The driver of the truck had lost control, plowed through Rector's yard and hit everything in it's path. The truck came to a screeching halt in the garage. Once downstairs, Rector said, she could see four men and woman trying to back the truck up. When that didn't work, she said, they ditched the truck and ran off. Rector then called 911.
In the light of day, the full extent of the damage was eye-opening. The driver plowed over a tree, tore up her yard, banged up two of the family's cars and a trailer, and mangled the garage.
"I don't know how to make sense of something so senseless," Rector continued.
Rector hopes police will catch the people responsible.
"Senseless acts have consequences - financial and otherwise - and I think that they should be brought to account for that," Rector said.
Spokane Valley Police are working to determine the identity of the teens. As of Thursday evening, the suspects were still on the run.
