SPOKANE, Wash. - A source within the Spokane Police tells KHQ's Alex Rozier that they have arrested Joshua Burnett in connection with the death of the 18 month old baby, Rylee Castner, who died on March 31st.
Burnett is the boyfriend of Rylee's mom. Rylee Castner died after an emergency surgery at the hospital at the end of March. Rylee's mom said her boyfriend was watching her son in the morning and later that day at a barbeque she noticed Rylee was bleeding from the mouth. They rushed him to the hospital, but he lost his life hours later.
Spokane Police said they were able to quickly determine that the injuries to the little boy were intentional and Commander Brad Arleth said he believes Burnett knew exactly what he was doing.
"One of the things that makes this fairly horrific is that when the victim was being transported to the hospital by family members, the suspect was actually mocking the victim as he lost some of his ability to control some of his muscles as his head was bobbing," Arleth said.
The police want all parents to know that there are resources for parents in the community that may be stressed out and they urge that before people do anything they regret, please seek help.
Meantime, Arleth doesn't want anyone to say anything else about the person they arrested. "A lot of times we give suspects too much attention for what they've done, just like in school shooters incidents," Commander Arleth said. "The real tragedy here is an 18 month old that's never going to grow up and go to kindergarten or anything, and not going to be able to contribute to the success of Spokane, did we lose a world famous architect or a doctor that will cure cancer? We won't know."
