Parent/ Guardian Update Re:  Security and Safety at School

Dec. 20, 2012

As promised, the district wanted to send an update communication to parents and guardians regarding school safety efforts before the holiday break.

Earlier this week building principals and district administration met with Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Wayne Longo and Kootenai County Sheriff-elect Ben Wolfinger to talk about the recent school tragedy in Sandy Hook and discuss ways the Coeur d'Alene School District can enhance the solid School Emergency Response Plan (SERP) we have in place.  Our district is very fortunate to have such a close working relationship with area law enforcement.  Our School Resource Officers (SROs) not only represent a daily preventative presence at schools across our district, the officers actively practice on a monthly basis scenarios to help stop threats at our schools, sharpen their skills at the shooting range and spend time familiarizing themselves with our school layouts and staff.  All the above aids our school district's safety plans in both prevention and response.

District Administrators sought advice from our local law enforcement leaders on ways we can quickly and cost-effectively make short-term enhancements to our school security measures as well as talk about long term areas of focus.

Each school building is reviewing in detail its building's SERP plan and assessing points of entry.

School buildings are tightening visitor check-in procedures and monitoring visitors at the school.

School buildings are reviewing the usage of ID badges as a quick means for identification.

The district is also assessing perimeter fencing at each one of our 17 school campuses, video surveillance, possible increase in SRO support and other opportunities for security enhancements.
