Spokane Valley Police: Burglar Meets Marine

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE VALLEY POLICE DEPT: On Friday, December 28, 2012, at 10:45 a.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a residence near the 12400 block of East Desmet Road for a burglary in progress. The caller advised 911 when she, her husband, daughter-in-law and son came home they saw their animals were outside and that the front screen door was open.

The homeowner told 911 that her son, an active United States Marine home on leave from Afghanistan, went inside the residence. The Marine's mother told 911 she heard yelling in the house as deputies arrived on scene.

When deputies entered the residence, they found 43-year-old Christopher Schwanke detained on the ground by 22-year-old U.S. Marine Infantryman Alex Pohle and his father.

Once in custody, Mr. Pohle told deputies he located Schwanke in his parents' bedroom. Mr. Pohle said Schwanke tried to shut the door, which was not an intelligent choice. Infantryman Pohle pushed the door open, escorted Schwanke to the ground with his father and waited only a minute or two for deputies to arrive.

Schwanke had scattered jewelry around the bedroom, but he was not successful in his burglary attempt.

Schwanke was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the charge of Residential Burglary after a short stay at a local medical facility. Schwanke has over 27 years of criminal history in Spokane County.
