Spokane Police Department Press Release:
Spokane Police are combating a near 40% rise in vehicle prowling by introducing a new campaign to help citizens prevent theft. The "Remove it or Lose it!" Anti-Vehicle Prowling Campaign is aimed at offering important information and tips to citizens in an effort to protect them from becoming victims.
Spokane Police Crime Analysis experts have seen a 38% increase in vehicle prowling activity in the past year. A one week sample of incidents determined 85%-90% of victims of vehicle prowling had left valuables in plain view. The bulk of the targeted property was backpacks, purses, laptops and gym bags. While SPD continues to combat these crimes by responding to and arresting offenders, the department is taking a proactive approach with the "Remove it or Lose it!" campaign. The campaign offers tips to prevent vehicle prowling from information gathered from victims of the crime.
"Remove it or Lose it!" Stop Vehicle Prowling offers the following tips to citizens:
Help Us, Help you:
Do not leave belongings in your vehicle
When shopping, put your bags in the trunk
Do not leave valuables in the console or glove box
Park in a well-lighted or high traffic area
Lock your vehicle doors
If you see someone your car, call 911
The Spokane Police Department is partnering with local business to spread our message and help keep OUR community safe. Today, posters will be distributed by local COPS shops. Citizens will see inserts in their City of Spokane August utility bills.
