SPOKANE, Wash. - A major development tonight on who will be the next Spokane Police Chief as sources close to KHQ tell us that two of the men are the clear frontrunners, Frank Straub and Dan Mahoney. Sources say, George Markert, the director of Public Integrity in Rochester, New York, did not impress the panels like the other two and it appears he is out of contention.
Mahoney is the Director of the Ingleside Police Station within the San Francisco Police and Straub, who's under fire in his current role, works as the Director of Public Safety in Indianapolis. KHQ Local News Reporter Alex Rozier spoke with Mahoney who is back home in San Francisco now and he said that he had not heard anything officially, but he said if it is true he would be honored to be one of the two remaining finalists. Mahoney went on to compliment his competitor saying Frank Straub is a man who has "done a lot and been a lot of places." Rozier asked Mahoney if he is still interested in the position now a week removed from the interview, he said absolutely. He said that he actually sent a letter to Mayor David Condon today to thank him and he added that Spokane is "not only a beautiful town, but a nice town, too."
KHQ tried to reach out to Frank Straub's office in Indianapolis, but unfortunately the Indianapolis Administrative Office where Straub currently works was closed.
There is another piece to this story as sources have confirmed to KHQ that the law enforcement panel that interviewed all three finalists for the position of police chief was not impressed with any of them.
KHQ's Alex Rozier asked Mahoney what he thought of that and he said if that is in fact true he is disappointed and he said he believes in his personal case, he is more than qualified, although he would not speak to the other finalists. Ultimately, what the law enforcement panel thinks doesn't matter because at the end of the day it is Mayor David Condon's decision.
