SPOKANE, Wash. - Flipping through an evidence binder, Deputy Craig Chamberlain says he's come across a lot of stolen items in his career, but nothing quite as rare as what the Spokane County Sheriff's Office recently uncovered.
"We have letters to family members, we have photographs," said Deputy Craig Chamberlain, Spokane County Sheriff's Office. Detectives found items that appear to have come from the Civil War era, and they all are still in excellent condition. "I mean you can still read all these letters from soldiers back to family members at home," said Chamberlain.
Detectives found the vintage materials while retrieving stolen items from a home during a recent burglary investigation. They checked records back to 2008 to try to find any victims reporting them missing, but found nothing."
We're not even sure if the owner of these items even know that they're missing," said Chamberlain.Detectives will continue to hold on to the historical documents, but they'd love to find the owner and return what may be important family heirlooms.
