COEUR, d'ALENE, Idaho - Residents of a small north Idaho town are still coming to grips with an attempted murder-suicide. An Idaho State Police Trooper made the gruesome discovery after he approached a car flashing its emergency lights. Inside the car was a woman, her throat slit, barely able to speak and near death. It wasn't until a few hours later that her husband was found in their home, dead.
The woman, Mary McGreal, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she is expected to survive from multiple stab wounds. The stab wounds, according to Sheriff's, left Mary partially paralyzed on her left side but doctors say she is getting some mobility back. However, questions remain about the events that led up to this bizarre incident.
Late Saturday night Mary and her husband Kurt McGreal were at a benefit in St. Maries. Investigators say Kurt had been drinking "heavily" that night. Sometime on the drive home, the couple got into an argument, shortly after investigators say Kurt McGreal stabbed his wife multiple times.
Investigators say Kurt then left the car, tossed the knife in the river and then walked to their home about a mile away. Deputies say that Kurt had two bodily stab wounds, and a gunshot wound to his head, all appeared to be self inflicted. He also tried setting fire to the home deputies say.
What makes this so tough neighbors and investigators say is Kurt McGreal had no criminal history and no known run ins with law enforcement. When deputies talked with Mary McGreal they say she had no idea why her husband apparently did this.
Mary McGreal is recovering in a hospital in Seattle.
