SPOKANE, Wash. - Firefighter Corey Stevens wasn't just controlling the attack on the fire - his family was also among those evacuated, as the flames crept closer:
"For my wife, that was a little scary, but got her out along with my son and everyone else, and went about business," he said.
Medical Lake Mayor John Higgins told KHQ he was at city hall when the alarm sounded, and he was told 'Your end of town is on fire.' Indeed, Mayor Higgins lives a street away from the homes evacuated, and was worried when he saw the smoke. He specifically wanted to give his thanks to everyone who, as he said, "helped save Medical Lake today."
"I really appreciate all the help from District 10, District 3 responded, Airway Heights, the Sheriff's Department and State Patrol, everyone was out here," Mayor Higgins added. "They got the fire put down pretty quick and saved a whole lot of houses that could have actually gone up, and if one would have went I think it would have been a lot worse."
Mayor Higgins told us, the fire may have started from someone cutting scrap metal in the field.
