On Friday, December 28, 2012, at about 4:45 PM, members of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and Northern Lakes Fire Department and EMS were advised of a trauma call. Information was received that a subject was being transported by private vehicle to the local area from an area northeast of Hayden, Idaho, commonly referred to as the Hayden Creek shooting pit, with a severe hand injury.
EMS and Sheriff's personnel met up with the private vehicle at a convenience store parking lot in Hayden, where they contacted Dylan E. Dodd, 20, of Coeur d'Alene, Alex L. Encinas, 23 of Athol, and Dane E. Anderson, 20, of Coeur d'Alene.
Investigation of the incident disclosed that after spending the majority of the day at the shooting pit, Dodd and Encinas were attempting to start a fire. Having trouble starting the fire, Dodd and Encinas decided to use some of their leftover exploding target material as an accelerant. When Dodd neared the fire with the material, which was contained in a bag, the material exploded, severely injuring Dodd's right hand. Encinas also suffered lower body injuries. Anderson was not injured.
Dodd received first aid from another subject who was at the shooting pit at the same.
Dodd was transported to Kootenai Medical Center via ambulance where he was treated for serious but not life threatening injuries. His currently listed in stable condition. Encinas was taken to KMC by private vehicle for treatment of his injuries.
The material involved in this incident was determined to be an unidentified exploding target material purchased over the counter at a local sporting goods store.
The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to use extreme care when handling accelerants or explosives and discourages the use of any such materials outside of their intended applications.
