Footprints In Snow Help Kootenai Co. Sheriff's Deputies Find Vehicle Thief

HAYDEN, Idaho - Kootenai County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a 19 year-old man Friday morning after he stole two different vehicles. Deputies say Michael MacKinnon first stole a truck from the Target parking lot in Coeur d'Alene around 3:15 Friday morning. MacKinnon crashed that vehicle at Government Way and Highway 95 and then abandoned the truck and fled on foot.   A deputy responding to that crash started following footprints in the snow, which led him to a steel plant. As he was approaching the plant, one of the steel plant company trucks passed him at a high rate of speed, with significant damage and headlights turned off.   Deputies say MacKinnon stole that truck and crashed through a fence to get it out of the plant's parking lot. A short chase ensued, and continued into Hayden. Deputies say MacKinnon turned into the "Juno Mobile Home Park" where he jumped from the moving truck. The truck kept going, and ultimately smashed into a home there. A Hayden city engineer was inspecting the home to see how significantly it was damaged and whether it was safe to live in.   MacKinnon was taken into custody minutes after the crash. He's facing a number of felony charges. A Sheriff's Department Sergeant tells KHQ MacKinnon had just moved from San Diego to Coeur d'Alene within the last month or so.
