Downtown Spokane Transforms Into The Largest 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament In The World

SPOKANE, Wash. – It is Hoopfest weekend, and more than 250,000 athletes and fans are expected to be in downtown Spokane over the next two days. Area police are ramping up security to make sure there are no safety concerns.
Numerous roads closed just before 7:00pm Friday night as volunteers began transforming the streets of downtown into hundreds of 3-on3 basketball courts.
They will us about eight miles of tape spread out over 42 blocks creating over 450 courts before Friday night is done.
Organizers are expecting 28,000 players on 7,000 different teams playing over 14,000 games over the next two days.
To make sure everything goes smoothly, 75 officers from the Spokane police department will be on foot and bike throughout the event keeping an eye on things.
Other local enforcement is will also be assisting during the weekend to deal with the large crowds.
Washington State Patrol also has their mobile DUI unit parked downtown and wants to remind everyone that they will be conducting DUI emphasis patrols all weekend.
Games start Saturday morning at 8:00am and run until 7:00pm both days.
