OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FROM THE COEUR d' ALENE POLICE DEPT: Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Wayne Longo found himself chasing another robber Thursday night after an alert citizen called in an armed robbery that had just occurred at 6:40pm at the Boulevard Food Mart located at 1801 NW Blvd. Residents may remember Chief Longo was involved in a foot pursuit in August of 2010 and captured a suspect who had stolen a vehicle.
In this instance Chief Longo had just turned onto NW Boulevard when the robbery called was aired. Officers Tim Neal and Pete Tufford also responded to the area to assist the Chief in locating the suspect.
The store clerk reported to 911 a transient later identified as Jon Wallace Hohnsbehn had come into the Food Mart and stole a couple of bottles of beer. The clerk confronted Hohnsbehn and he pulled a knife on the clerk and said "I will stab you". Hohnsbehn then left the area on foot and walked toward Riverstone. David Travieso, 41 years of age of Post Falls was in the store and witnessed the robbery.
David immediately became an alert Good Samaritan and began following suspect Hohnsbehn on foot. David kept in phone contact with 911 and let operators know the suspects location. David said at one point the suspect picked up a rock and was threatening him with it. Chief Longo found Hohnsbehn walking on the Centennial Trail just North West of Beebe Blvd.
Hohnsbehn was carrying a beer bottle and kept drinking out of it while the Chief ordered him to drop the bottle and get down on the ground. Hohnsbehn shouted obscenities at the Chief and refused to comply. Chief Longo and officers Tufford and Neal were able to physically gain control of Hohnsbehn and put him under arrest.
Chief Longo had high praise for David Travieso "This citizen went above and beyond to help police capture a dangerous individual and protect our community from possible further harm. We are very grateful for the actions he took to help us arrest this violent offender." Hohnsbehn was transported to the jail and charged with robbery and aggravated assault.
