COEUR D' ALENE, Idaho – A Saturday evening drive down eastbound I-90 near Coeur d'Alene suddenly turned into a scene out of a movie for several drivers who were caught in the path of a reckless driver who Coeur d'Alene police say hit at least five cars, seemingly intentionally.
"I looked in the rearview mirror and saw the cloud of dust on the left side of the freeway," said Kon Shiva, who owns the local auto glass business The Spokane Shop.
Shiva was driving with his wife and another couple when he saw the reckless driver come up behind him, hitting car after car. He called 911 and recorded video of the whole thing, which has gone viral online since he posted it on his business' Facebook page.
"I saw him hit the first car, and the parts start flying out," Shiva told KHQ's Kelsey Watts.
But the erratic driver never stopped, leaving a trail of twisted metal and rattled drivers – including a pregnant woman who was hit. Police say her black Honda Civic was spun around and she hit the guardrail, but luckily wasn't seriously hurt.
"At first I thought maybe the guy's in a hurry, maybe a family emergency," Shiva recalled. "But then when he was trying to push cars out of the way, there was definitely something more involved."
Thanks in large part to Shiva, who followed the driver while on the phone with 911, police were finally able to catch up with him; but even that's not where the story ends.
Coeur d'Alene police say Glenn McNutt, 50, of Coeur d'Alene was driving the 2006 silver Kia in the video. They say he refused to comply with officers, and had to be physically removed from his car.
McNutt was taken to the Kootenai County Jail on charges of felony DUI, aggravated battery, leaving the scene of a crash, and driving without insurance. Police are now awaiting the results of his blood draw.
Amazingly, nobody was seriously hurt in the string of crashes, and police say nobody requested medical attention at the scene.
But it's a scene Kon Shiva – and dozens of other drivers – won't soon forget.
