WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is condemning "in the strongest terms" what it calls a terrorist attack in Beirut that killed a top security official and seven others.
National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor says in a statement that there is "no justification for using assassination as a political tool." He says the U.S. will stand with the Lebanese government to bring to justice those responsible "for this barbaric attack."
The White House is offering its condolences to those killed and injured in the car bombing in Beirut on Friday. Lebanon's state-run news agency says the head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, was killed.
Vietor says Lebanon's security and stability are vital for the Lebanese people and their neighbors in the region.
