Volunteers Give Back On Thanksgiving

SPOKANE, Wash. - Thanksgiving is usually a time for family and friends to get together to eat and enjoy each other's company. But for many people this holiday can be a lonely one. However, thanks to the many volunteers at Meals On Wheels, some of those folks will have a little interaction with people that care.

Sean Boyle and his wife have been at Meals On Wheels since 5:30am, helping prepare a Thanksgiving dinner for the hundreds of people coming in for a free meal.

For Sean, it makes this holiday much more fulfilling, giving his time, by helping others that need more than him.

"You know I'm a citizen of this country and that's what I think citizens ought to be doing," Boyle said.

Not all of the food prepared at Meals On Wheels was served there. A lot of it ended up down the street at Plymouth Congregational Church, where volunteers boxed up about 150 meals for drivers to deliver to homes throughout Spokane.

Jessica Ruby and her friends loaded up in her mom's SUV this morning. This is the third Thanksgiving Jessica has volunteered with Meals On Wheels.

"We kind of take for granted the people we have, and we don't realize the people that don't have that," Ruby said.

Thanksgiving can be a very lonely time for many of the people answering these doors and receiving these meals. Jessica and her friends might be the only interaction these folks will have on this holiday.
