$111,000 a year. Sounds like a pretty good salary, right? Well, according to a new study by the Washington Policy Center, that's how much the average Spokane Police Officer brings in each year. That salary includes the cost of health care and retirement benefits. But $111,000 is more than some larger cities.
That's 87% higher than Spokane's median household income. In Boise, officers make about $98,000 a year. In Portland, the average is about $102,000.
We reached out to the Director of Communications and Marketing for their reaction to these numbers who said they appreciate these numbers to continue the conversation. He put emphasis on the fact that the police contract is open and underway.
He also stressed that there is no easy answer and one that they are asking right now during contract negotiations. He reiterated the point that the mayor wants to make sure the budget provides service at an acceptable level and at a price tag that's affordable.
