DEER PARK, Wash – If you've driven down Main Street in Deer Park lately, you've probably seen it: a hot tub sitting on a trailer, with a "For Sale" sign, saying that the proceeds go toward the Deer Park High School archery club.
But after it was stolen overnight Monday, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office hit a bulls eye.
Just an hour and a half after Jeff Hickethier called Crime Check to report it stolen, they found it.
"One of the deputies was just driving by and saw someone unloading a hot tub off the trailer, and had I not turned that report in, there'd be no way I'd be driving with my trailer back to Deer Park," Hickethier told KHQ on the scene.
The hot tub was found at a home off Elk-Chattaroy Road, some 15 miles away. While KHQ was there, a man was driven away from the scene in the back of a patrol car, but the sheriff's office says it's still investigating, and no arrests have been made.
"Everything's there, they just cut my license plate off the trailer," Hickethier added, noting that the jacuzzi was in good enough shape it could still be sold.
And that's good news to the mother of an archery club student; she had just called Hickethier before he found the hot tub stolen, to say she'd take it.
But thanks to some quick police work, the $3,000 that would have gone to the student club will now find its target.
"What started out as a real bad day is now a real excellent day," Hickethier added.
