St. Maries Authorities Investigating Attempted Murder-Suicide

ST. MARIES, Idaho - Authorities in St. Maries, Idaho are investigating what appears to be an attempted murder/suicide. According to Benewah County Sheriff Dave Resser, Idaho State Police found a woman, identified as Mary McGreal, sitting in her vehicle on State Route 3 shortly before 2 a.m. with a cut across her throat.

McGreal was transported to Benewah Community Hospital before being taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. When authorities tried contacting McGreal's husband, Kurt at the couples home about a mile away they found him un responsive. Investigators say Kurt McGreal had what appeared to be self inflicted stab wounds, and a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Investigators also say Kurt McGreal tried setting the home on fire but the fire quickly burned itself out because of a lack of oxygen.

Benewah County investigators say it appears Kurt McGreal tried killing his wife, Mary then killing himself. Neighbors who spoke with KHQ say the couple had no known history of domestic issues. Benewah County Sheriff Dave Resser echoed those claims. Resser says the couple was at a benefit the night before and people who spoke with the couple that night say Kurt and Mary seemed "Ok". Investigators also say Kurt McGreal has no known criminal record.

Mary McGreal is recovering in Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she is expected to survive. The extent of any long term injuries Mary Mcgreal may have suffered is unknown.
