Spokane Man Dies After Being Tased In Benton County Jail

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) - A 29-year-old man hospitalized after being stunned with a Taser at the Benton County jail has died.

Kevin T. Culp of Spokane, who died Tuesday, was in the jail as a contract inmate for the state Department of Corrections. Benton County Coroner John Hansens said in a statement that an autopsy would be performed Wednesday.

Authorities say Culp had a medical condition and was housed in an isolation cell so jail nurses could watch him. Culp had an "unknown medical episode" Dec. 17, and authorities say he became combative, struggled with officers and bit them. Culp was shocked with a Taser, put into a restraint chair and moved to a different isolation cell that allowed for closer observation. Staff later discovered Culp was unresponsive and paramedics were called. An independent investigation of the incident will be conducted. (Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
