It's every parent's worst nightmare: having your child lured online by a predator. And it happened again – almost.
Jason Richards, 31, of Federal Way was arrested in Spokane, in the middle of a trip to pick-up a 15-year-old girl he met on Facebook.
Court records show the two met through a Facebook App called "Are You Interested" in mid-March. In late April, Richards asked the girl to marry him, and she agreed. But he didn't meet her until early May, when Richards came to Spokane and took the girl to a hotel room on two separate days to have sex.
Richards initially told investigators he believed the girl was 18, but when they reviewed his chat history, it showed he knew she was 15 before their sexual relationship began.
Investigators say there were thousands of messages between the two discussing how she may have to change her name, and Richards' plan to drive back to Spokane in the middle of the night to pick up the girl in an alley behind her house. Richards bought the girl a cell phone and she agreed to deactivate her Facebook account so her parents couldn't track her whereabouts.
When the girl's parents learned of the relationship, they continued chatting with Richards online while he was en route to Spokane. When he arrived at 3:00 a.m. in the alley behind their home, the girl's parents detained Richards until police could arrive.
He was booked on charges of third-degree rape of a child and attempted first-degree kidnapping.
