In the past 48 hours twelve Honda's have been stolen in Spokane and Spokane Valley. In the Valley five Honda Accord's and one Integra were stolen. There was also one attempted theft of a Honda Civic reported. Three of the vehicles were stolen from the Valley Mall parking lot. One was stolen from the Costco parking lot on East Sprague and there was an attempted theft in the Home Depot parking lot.
Additionally, one of the other thefts occurred near the 8100 block of East Appleway and the sixth was taken from the area of 1900 S. St. We do not have the exact addresses of the Honda's stolen in Spokane.
We reached out to the Spokane Police Department today and they told us that Hondas are their number one stolen car. In fact, 90's Accords and Civics are most wanted by thieves and police say it has to do with their ignition system and shaved keys.
"Shaved keys work with a variety of older cars," Spokane Police Captain Dan Torok said. "Often times you'll find one particular thief who will focus on one particular make and model of car because he has shaved keys that fit that make and model."
So what can people to do to not become a victim? Change your ignition and door locks.
Captain Torok said here are the prices he found when he called around:
"If you were to replace your ignition and your door locks on a Honda using factory equipment, about 850 dollars, which is a bit high for an older model vehicle. A local locksmith gave me a quote of replacing the tumblers in the ignition of 85 dollars and 250 to do the door locks and the ignition," Captain Torok said.
The Spokane City Council is currently considering an ordinance that would allow police to make an arrest of someone who is in possession of shaved keys.
