Leavenworth Votes To Ban Marijuana Dispensaries

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) - The city council for Leavenworth has voted to ban medical marijuana collective gardens and dispensaries.
    
The Wenatchee World reports that (http://bit.ly/MqDgiS) Tuesday's 5-2 vote confirms a moratorium enacted in June after a collective garden opened in Leavenworth.
    
City officials moved quickly to explore ways to stop the business.
    
But during the city council meeting, nurses and patients pleaded with city leaders that they needed a trusted source for medical marijuana.
    
Leavenworth Mayor Cheri Kelley Farivar says the city worried about liability, legality, zoning and public safety.
    
Chelan County deputy prosecutor Roy Fore says under federal law, possession of marijuana is illegal and so are collective gardens. But under state law, collective gardens, which are defined as a place where small amounts of marijuana are sold and dispersed for free or by donation, are legal.
