WASHINGTON (AP) - The House of Representatives has backed legislation that eases another restriction on the U.S. providing aid to Myanmar.
The bill,which still has to pass the Senate, would allow the U.S. to provide financial aid to the country also known as Burma through the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
The U.S. has been rolling back its tough economic sanctions to reward Myanmar for democratic reforms.
The measure was approved late Wednesday, hours after Congress presented Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi its highest honor. During her visit, Suu Kyi has endorsed the easing of remaining sanctions.
Currently, legislation requires the U.S. to veto such lending to Myanmar.
Myanmar must also clear its arrears with the development banks before lending can resume.
