House has moment of silence for slain diplomats

By Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House has interrupted its legislative business to observe a moment of silence for Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans killed in Libya.

House Speaker John Boehner, in asking members to rise and pray, said the slayings Tuesday in Benghazi were a jolting reminder that freedom is still besieged by those who put violence over free expression and terror over democracy.

Lawmakers in both the House and Senate gave speeches deploring the killings. Rep. Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat and one of only two Muslims in Congress, said the anti-Muslim online video that sparked protests in Egypt and Libya was amateurish and stupid, but resorting to murder instead of peaceful protest was morally objectionable and should be condemned by the world.
