On Tuesday, multiple fire crews were called out to a 10 acre wildfire just off of State Route 291 at Long Lake. Crews from Washington's Department of Natural Resources and State Parks & Fire Districts 1 & 9 say they are having difficulties getting a handle on the fire because of the steep hill and access to where the fire is currently burning. Crews are also using two planes to drop water and retardant to try and keep the fire from spreading. At this point crews say it appears the fire started near the roadway before climbing the nearby hillside. There's no word yet on containment. Washington State patrol has closed Highway 291 just north of the Spokane Stevens County line because of debris like boulders and logs rolling down the hillside onto the roadway. The highway is expected to be shut down for at least the next few hours.
