PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CITY OF SPOKANE: The independent Use of Force Commission will hold the first public meeting on its draft report on Wednesday, Jan. 16. The Commission will present its findings and recommendations and accept comments from the public.
The meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers in the lower level of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd, from 2 to 4 p.m. The meeting will be shown live on CityCable 5 and on the City's web site at www.spokanecity.org.
The meeting also will be replayed on CityCable 5 on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m.; Monday, Jan. 21, at 8:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 12:30 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 27 at 9 a.m.
A second meeting of the Commission will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook.
The Use of Force Commission released its draft report in late December. With its charge of broadly considering the issue of police use of force, the Commission developed 26 recommendations divided into four topical areas: culture, Spokane Police Department policies and practices, civilian oversight, and city administration.
The report is the result of a nearly year-long process that included nine public meetings, multiple interviews, on-site visits, consultation with experts, the development of two additional reports by specialized consultants, and significant work to engage citizens in the process.
Citizens also may send their comments to useofforce@spokanecity.org. The full report is attached and available on the City's web site at www.spokanecity.org. Comments are due by Jan. 30.
