Chris weakens further, was hurricane briefly

MIAMI (AP) - Tropical Storm Chris, which spent mere hours Thursday as the first Atlantic Ocean hurricane of the season, continues to weaken far off the coast of Newfoundland.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said late Thursday that Chris had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (105 kph). It was 540 miles (869 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland and was moving northward at 14 mph (23 kph).
Earlier Thursday, forecasters said Chris had just achieved hurricane status with 75 mph (120 kph) top sustained winds.
The center said the storm poses no threats to land at this time.
