Bridge Worker Sentenced Over Substandard Work

SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) - A Montana man has been sentenced to three years on federal probation for trying to conceal substandard work on a $22 million bridge replacement project on U.S. Highway 2 in northern Idaho.

The Bonner County Daily Bee reports former Sletten Construction employee Kip David Harris of Boulder, Mont., was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill.

Harris was charged with directing workers on the Dover Bridge project to modify as many as 28 anchor bolts that were either improperly installed or sunk after concrete was poured, not leaving enough room for the nut to be attached. Workers threaded short pieces of bolt through a nut and used an epoxy to attach them to the bolts in an effort to pass inspection.

A federal investigation found the attempted cover-up created no serious safety issues.
