Administrator of North Idaho Assisted Living Facility Fined

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - The former administrator of a Coeur d'Alene assisted living facility has been fined.  Officials say she knew about a case of elder abuse and didn't report it.

Candy Pentland, the former administrator of Sylvan House, was disciplined by the board of examiners of the residential care facility administrators.

Pentland has not worked for the assisted living facility since 2010 and the investigations into her alleged failure to report an incident recently became public.

According to records, Pentland failed to report a "groping" incident that involved a 79-year old man and a 95-year old female who suffered from "macular degeneration" and dementia.

In two separate investigations by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and Bureau of Occupational Licenses, they determined that Pentland failed to promptly report the allegations to protective services, also failed to implement a plan to protect residents from future incidents.

Records show the incident that involved the two residents was when the 95-year old woman was, quote "touched in her upper area" underneath her shirt by the 79-year old man..

A caregiver had apparently witnessed the incident and asked Pentland if it should be reported to family members.  But Pentland allegedly said no, if the woman did not show signs of "distress".

Documents show Pentland was fined 25-hundred dollars and had her licenses renewal privileges revoked.

We also spoke with a representative with Sylvan House, who said "this is a matter that should not be sweeped under the rug" but directed us to their corporate office in Boise and no one called us back.
