While many fans were blindsided when Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise last week, she may have hinted at the decision in May.Six weeks ago, Holmes opened up to Elle for the magazine's August issue, which hits newsstands July 17. In the interview, the actress talked about the challenges of her high-profile marriage and what she described as her "new phase.""He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years," Holmes said of her now estranged husband. "I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that."Report: How much will Katie Holmes get in the divorce from Tom Cruise?Holmes also shot down accusations that she's using her A-list husband's name to further her career. "Things are not handed to anyone," she said. "If anything, you work a little bit harder when you're in such visible circumstances."Holmes, 33, started dating Cruise, 50, when she was 26. The actress explained to the mag that when she was in her twenties, "it's like you're trying too hard to figure everything out.""I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin.
